just picked up a used Pietta 58 that was said to have had a "trigger job" done to it. Problem is, there is no audible "click" at half cock and no solid lock up on half cock.

This is the time I've had to crack one open and Im not sure what Im looking for. Anyone have pictures of an unaltered Pietta Rem. 58 hammer...guess I'll start there

Keep in mind that the Remington has only three clicks when cocking the hammer as opposed to the usual four with the Colt design. It was said that you could spell C-O-L-T with the clicks. Remington's design is a bit different and an action job on a 58 begins (usually) with lightening up the mainspring.

Only had one "click"...when the hammer locked up in battery

One thing I notice with mine, is the hammer goes beyond the halfcock and then settles back into it.
Know what I mean?
The trigger does a little kick, when halfcock get's engaged, but the hammer has to go back down a bit to catch the notch.

I know I might get screamed at,
But all that aside, Is halfcock saftey all that important with a single action?
I mean with the Rem the hammer fit's into those cylinder notches to begin with,
then at least with me, from that point it's cocked and fired.

for loading, I would say the half cock is important...holds the hammer in place and allows the cylinder to spin free.dont want that hammer disengaging while I'm putting primers on the nipples either.
