I came across an interesting teston the 'Net about the common gun oils and how good or bad they are at protecting against rust. Since the rust thread pops up every so often, I thought it would be a good read for the list as we are all trying to protect our guns against rust day after day. I'm real impressed with the Eezox oil that is used in the rust test. Never heard of it but the link to Eezox claims it's great for muzzleloaders. You be the judge .... the test url is:

Ohio Rusty,
I would be interested to see a long term protective test. I have switched over to Ballistol this year but have never read anything in regards to long term protection on it...Jim

All I've ever used is a mix of 50% motor oil and 50% Kerosene. Although I live roughly 15 hours drive from the nearest salt water we do have severe humidity. I do get some Friendship browning at a rendezvous, but no serious rust.

My experience with Break Free was that it gunked up my barrel when shooting and it took me a couple of months of shooting before I got my barrel back to hitting on target.

 and that's why I don't get worked up over strange tests like these...the test environments don't represent any sort of reality...ie: I'm not going to throw any of my muzzleloaders into the ocean and let them lay there for a couple months :shake:

I keep them spotless, keep them in a good environment, well lubed, and they never rust.
Over the years I've used several on various firearms...WD40, Rem-Oil, 3-in-1 oil, Hoppes, Mil-Spec medium weapons oil, and for muzzleloaders, I use Hoppes and/or Natural Lube 1000 in the bore and any of the others on the outside.

For long term rust protection I use RIG hands down over all others. Ohio get hot, wet and sticky and is a place where everything rusts easily. Using Rig in and out for long term protection, never had problems with rust. My favotite gun oil was made by Ox Yoke named 'Best dam gun oil'. I think It's been discontinued for a while, and I only have a third of a bottle left.

Mr. Ohio Rusty,
We have used Eezox for well over ten years now as it is one of the few oils that perform well at -40 degrees below zero. We did a "cold soak" test (temperature was below -50 degrees F) on a Colt 1911 .45ACP and Desert Eagle .50AE. Both functioned perfectly.
However, would recommend cleaning trigger assemblies and firing pin assemblies completely of all oil and re-oiling on a regular basis. Of course that should be done regardless of type of oil used.
It has also worked quite well on our muzzle loaders, the times we have used it.
Best Wishes

Rusty,

Which Rig product do you use? Rig 2 Sportsman oil or the Rig gun grease?

People often use the name interchangeably. Both are good, but for different uses. I use the oil for a month or so, but the grease only for longer term storage.

I've never used Eezox. I've tried a zillion others over time though. Other than Ballistol for general work, I've settled on CorrosionX as my long term protectant and often my lube of choice.

Many oils work fine against rust, but CorrosionX was the only one I found that lubricated so well that it can keep my Ruger .22 pistol functioning through 3 or more bricks of ammo between cleanings.

Also, some of my guns sit in my safe for several years between shootings. I hate having to constantly maintain guns that I'm not regularly shooting. I've had CLP and many others fail on me during extended storage. CorrosionX lasts.

I had an experience this summer that convinced me further. I had a water leak and increased the humidity in one of my work spaces. I had several guns disassembled, including an SKS rifle with it's painted or whatever finish. Every gun and all of my steel tools rusted up before I notice, even the SKS. I had NEVER had even a spot of rust on an SKS before. I also had my Savage .22 apart in the room to be restocked when I have time. It had been wiped with CorrosionX beforehand and it was totally rust free, inside and out.
