Hah! I was fitting the buckles to my new buckle shoes while watching the Jas. Townsend and Son Youtube on this. Got the first shoe done, started the second. Realized I had forgotten to start the buckle from the other side so the top latchets on both shoes fold toward the outside. Pretty clever of me eh? So I reversed what I was doing and finished the second shoe, only to realize that I had it right the first time, and now both latchets point to the right, looking down. But I had trimmed off the under latchet as Townsend recommends. So now I need to splice some latchet back on.
I'm sitting here in fall-front knee breetches, over-the-knee hose, checked 18th century shirt and silk scarf, with Crocs on my feet as I type this. I dunno whether to laugh or cry.

:rotf: :(

If it makes any difference Billy, I'm laughing ....................................................................................................................................................................................................with you, i feel your pain buddy!

I almost did the same thing when putting buckles on my shoes. Stopped myself just in time. Its hard to march when you don't know which foot you led off with. Might even confuse your Sargent. On second thought , you can't confuse a sargent, A lieutenant yes the sarge. no.

Correct on the Sergeant,we are Never confused [perhaps a mite turned around at times......]

Had a similar experience once while making moccassins.... I ended up with two left mocs  and then I got the friendly advice to start again, and if I got myself another left footer, I had someone else make me 3 right feet... :surrender: :idunno: :shocked2:

After taking a breather and coming back to the shoes, I was able to reposition the buckle on the SNAFU shoe and saddle-stitch the end back on the latchet. Fortunately, the stitching mostly falls under the buckle edge and you'd have to be looking for it to see it. I'll just use it to remind which shoe is left and which is right until the lasts form to my feet. The shoes are remarkably comfortable! Best $95 I've spent in a while.
