Do you use Pyrodex? Here’s the story: “Secret Santa” at work delivered his last present to me yesterday. He followed up a Rapalla Shad Glass Rap and gunsock long enough for my flintlock with a jar of 2F Pyrodex. I have an 1860’s 12 gauge percussion, 2 TC Hawkens percussions, a Hopkins/Allen underhammer and my first flintlock, a club butt fowler delivered in September. None of these has ever had Pyrodex used in them; I have never used Pyrodex. Not sure I am interested in using it, but I have a pound so”¦.What advantages/disadvantages are there? Do you mix it with BP? Do I give it to a friend and stick with the BP? Shoot it up for fun with my boy? How many use Pyrodex? Thanks.

I used the BP substitute Pyrodex RS (2F) for years in percussions and it did very well for me...when I switched to Flintlocks and Goex, I found Goex to be so superior that I switched my caplocks to Goex also.

I'm STILL using up leftover Pyrodex RS in my Flinters for plinking at the range...I use a "layered load" approach...20grns Goex 3F poured downbore first, followed by 50 (or 60, 70) grns Pyrodex RS...works perfectly for that.

And of course it'll work in your percussions as advertised...

Pyrodex RS is all i have ever used in my double barrel .12 ga. Also used it for years in caplock rifles. Once i started using flinters i had to go to real BP. I use Goex in the flinters, but would like to try some KIK.

Major problems with Pyrodex are the difficulty of getting consistent light-off (in some guns) due to its higher ignition temp and its high corrosiveness. If you shoot Pyrodex, clean the gun IMMEDIATELY after shooting! While black powder residue is hygroscopic (absorbs atmospheric moisture), Pyrodex residue actually seems to be aggressively corrosive.

Noah,
Thanks for that info...I don't use pyrodex,
but i have never heard that before but it does
make sence. :hmm:

If you can get real black close by, never ever put any pyrodex in your guns! I used it for years and then switched to black. Goex is so much better there is no comparing. I am using it again right now since the black supply close by has dried up. There is no comparison.

I shoot Pyrodex RS and P in my percussion guns for informal target shooting.
Why?
Because until recently, the only way to get real BP was to order it my mail or wait until the NMLRA Winter Nationals are held here in Phoenix Arizona. (Thunderbird now is carrying it).
Most of the gun stores here do carry Pyrodex.

As others have said, in caplock rifles/pistols, some guns have a dislike for it and will missfire or have delayed ignition. Some of my other guns don't seem to notice it is not black powder.

If I am just poking holes in a piece of paper it is not much more than an annoyance. If I were hunting where the first shot has to be a sure thing, I would not use it unless I didn't have any real black powder.

On the + side, it produces very little fouling and it will shoot all day without wiping the bore once.

I have never seen a problem with corrosion in my guns, but I always clean them within an hour of shooting them.
For me, plain old soap and water seems to clean the Pyrodex fouling out without any problems.

I would suggest that you take your Pyrodex and your son out and have a good time burning it up in your caplocks. :) I know you will both enjoy it. :)

Yes it will work fine for target and hunting but ingnition is not as fast and sure as real bp and you must test it. In my Renegade it worked fine no hangfires at all. In other sidelocks I own it was hit or miss as to whether it would go bang after sitting in the barrel all day but worked fine at the range.

Whoever the secrete Santa was that you had was a very thoughtfull person and should be congradulated for a very nice gift.

Hats off to the secrete Santa :hatsoff:

Hooray!!
