I've seen a lot of threads about both so far and I'm a bit confused. It seems that most don't like the QLA and most do like coned muzzles. It seems that the problems attributed to the QLA would also be present with a coned muzzle also. I don't own either, so I have nothing to go on and that's why I'm confused. Could some of you with experience clear this up please? Thanks.

No, a QLA and a coned muzzlke are different.

A QLA is the first 1.25" of barrel with the lands removed...it is a straight walled groove size false muzzle...it's itended purpose is to ensure better conical alignment to the axis of the bore when starting a conical...it slides in straight then stops on top of the ends of the lands and you punch it in with a short starter.
A QLA offers no benefit to aligning a sphere like a round ball, and if not careful, balls can slide off a patch when inserting them. Plus, when a PRB is down inside a QLA and comes to rest on the top of the lands they can no longer be thumb started as they can't be reached, necessitating the use of a short starter or ramrod to punch them into the lands.

A coned muzzle is a tapered cone to ease starting of a round ball.

I've got 3 .50 cal guns that are coned- a lyman t.r., a t/c hawken and a cva mtn rifle. I also have a new englander with qla. I really can't tell the difference in how they shoot, and they all load very easy. In fact, the new englander is my least favorite, so I that's my loaner gun and dammit if the nephews don't out shoot me with it every time! I think t/c just got a patent on what was a very good, but very old idea.

Does the QLA effect PRB accuracy any? I guess the reason I ask is that I've seen tools for cutting both and have been curious about the differences in performance, if any. I have a couple mid twist guns that I wouldn't mind easier loading with PRB and conical, but I also have slow twist guns and was curious if the QLA cutter would work just as well with them or if I need to buy both. Trying to save a buck like always.

Thanks for the answers. :)

The only QLA I'm familiar with is the TC Factory produced barrel with QLA already there...can't speak to any effect on accuracy...the only one I had made one trip to the range before I sent it back to TC to be replaced with a non-QLA barrel.

Apparently making a QLA involves boring out the lands then crowning the top of the lands at the recessed muzzle...didn't know there was a 'tool' to do it and the only gunshop QLA work I'm aware of has been moving the front sights back, cutting off the QLAs, and recrowning the muzzles.
