I recently decided to build my first rifle using a pre-inletted stock for a Vincent Ohio rifle. I purchased a fancy maple stock, and it has a couple of dark lines on both sides of the butt section. They are about 1/32" and are about three inches long. My guess is that they are inclusions of some sort. They really stand out in the unfinished stock. Will these lines show up when the stock is finished? Can they be sanded out? Any advice? Obviously, I'm new at this, but am looking forward to the project.

IMO, each hunk of wood is different. Even from the same tree.
The lines you are concerned with may be shallow and disappear as you sand the stock, or they may go almost all the way thru. Don't worry about them.
As almost all of the original guns were stained, I assume you will do the same. After staining, they will probably just blend in. ::
