Good afternoon everyone.

I'm considering making a take-off of the York County Screw Top horns (as pictured on page 139 of Muzzleloader Magazine's Book of Buckskinning II.

I've never seen an authentic, or recreated one, but it looks like an interesting project.

My question concerns the source for the tap and dies used. The book lists a 5/8 X 11. I don't know where to look for sizes such as that.

As a follow-along to that question:

I've also been looking at the wood threading tap and die tools that could be used for making a filling plug in the base. ( I'd appreciate any leads on where reasonable, but well made ones may be available) Harbour Freight's is affordable, but most of the stuff I get there is usually of flea market quality.

If you have ever used one, would they work for something hard like the horn?

Thank you, H Robinson

 since horn is not to hard to cut would a steel bolt and matching nut cut the thereads :hmm:

The wood taps and dies have a HUGE thread... not like even the largest steel nuts and bolts.

The only tap and die for wood I've ever seen was from harbour freight... And some of their tools really are cheap imports.

However, if they are steel, you could harden them (with kasenite or an oven). They should last on horn better than wood. I've wanted to make a threaded horn for a while, but haven't found a tap and die locally.

If you use the HF set, would you post of your experiences with them?

Good luck...

Woodcraft sells tapes and dies for wood. Do a google search for "woodcraft". Should be on top.

you may try pipe dies they come in a vast array of sizes and the threads may be small yet deep enough to work just my opinion but looking at it this way the main horn could be tapped like a pipe while the tip could be tapped same as a pipe cap

:v I make taps and dies for wood from nuts and bolts available anywhere you find them ,like along the RR tracks. cut slanted grooved lengthwise with the dremel to give room for wood waste to excape and go for it. Bob

MSC has 5/8 11 taps and dies, 5/8 die link this is a link for one of their cheeper dies.
This is just one place to find machine tools. I buy stuff from them and it ships next day for me. Great place
