According to the chart Squirrelsaurus Rex shared with us, the 28 ga should mic at 0.550" -- does it work that way in practice?

What size ball & patch combo are you guys shooting in your 28 ga?

What shot & powder loads are giving you good patterns and penetration?

You might check this site out as they give a chart. After that go to there tab for loading a muzzle loader. It has some data you might want to look at.

Chart on wad size etc.

Yep 28ga = .55 cal. I always used a .530 ball and pillow tick (.018) Shot loads are about an ounce of shot and 70gr. of powder

Depends on the barrel maker, my Jack Garner 28 ga. mikes .560" and Circle Fly wads are a rather loose fit. Seems to pattern #6 shot OK and a .535" ball in a thick canvas patch seems a tight fit and shoots OK.

Hello A-Z Robert,
I shoot a .530 ball and when I bother to patch I use a ten thousandths patch. I use 70 gr. of goex 3f and my gun seems to be a shooting machine. For birds I use the standard wad set up and an equal amount of powder and shot. I broke 9 out of 12 today. My big mystery is why patching doesnt seem to effect accuracy in my gun. Roundball suggested using wonder wads behind a prb but I haven't had the opportunity to test that out yet.

I am wondering if old blue jeans cut to match the 53cal ball would work in my gun...it measures .568 amd works great with the .550 ball with old army issue m-14 cleaning patch cut into quarters...[that would be a square 1" about]. I have never tried a 53cal.ball and I know I don't have no ticked pillow cases. 53 ball are easier to come by and cheaper and I got plenty of wore out jeans. Just wondering?

I'd get some .535"s and try some denim.(they are easy to find, just like the .530's)
That's an odd bore, who made that barrel?

I used a .53 ball and bluejean patching in a T/C .56 Renegade smoothbore I had. I never miked the bore, but it should be close to yours. It shot great, BTW.

Good luck!
