I hit the range this morning with a batch of 300 and 380 grain .54 caliber R.E.A.L.'s lubed with liquid alox.
I've heard many pro's and con's about using alox so I had to try it myself.
I was impressed. The 300 grainers shot o.k. but not too impressive. 4-5 inch group at 50 yards with 100 grains of Pyro RS.
The 380 grainers where awesome. 1 1/2 inch group at 50 yards.
Fouling was very minimal and very easy to clean. I found no evidence of leading in the bore so far.
As most know, the Lee R.E.A.L. has very shallow lube grooves and are pretty hard to lube.
I highly recommend liquid alox to lube these with.
All you do is put them in a baggie or small plastic dish, squirt in some alox and tumble them to coat them thoroughly. Set them on waxed paper overnight and you're all set to shoot.

I have to do some casting next week. My brother and I shot off all my 320 grain for the .50 caliber last week, and no round ball left. When I get them done I am going to try a batch in Alox.

That rifle of your is sure a good shooter. Open sights with a group like that is nothing to sneeze at... ::

I do not use in lines, but the REAL is my standard load for deer out of a .58 cal. I drill a small hole in the tip to make a hollow point. Expansion is great, beats the round ball hands down. I should get a comp from the Lee company for selling so many of their molds to the local front stuffers.

:: ::Sorry for some reason I thought I was posting in the in-line thread. Sorry to insult you.

Most problems with Alox or Alox-blend lubes is that they are designed for smokless powders, not black powders. You are using liquid alox for its entended use.

For lubing them, I use my Lyman or RCBS lube press. I use a .452 die and Lyman Black Powder Gold or SPG BP lube. Although they are BP lubes, they work well with pyrodex and other smokeless powders up to 2,000fps, and generally better than most of the alox-blend lubes on .45 to .50 cal bullets. I havne't tried them for small bore cast bullet/smokeless shooting.
: Loaded with 60 to 90gr. 3F GOEX, and Lyman Black Powder Gold lube, SPG or OxYoke stick BP lubes, they'll put 5, 200gr. REAL bullets into 1" or less at 50yds. That's with open sights and a 60" twist.
: Using the press for lubing them is the fastest, least messy way of lubing REAL bullets. They still load easily, yet the press fills the lube grooves perfectly.
