I got a call from some buddies in Wisconsin that want to participate in the Raid this year. As long as those Vikings are going to drive that far, I figured I might as well tag along.

Anybody here have any experience in this event? How strict is the jury and the camping rules?

Mrs Coot & I have been to Martin's Station a good number of times. It is a great event - sort of like living a scene from Last of the Mohicans. We plan to be there again this year. It is fairly tightly juried - one fellow had to take down his canvas shower stall - "because they didn't have shower stalls". That said, I think that tight jurying makes it a better event. You have to be pretty authentic to get in but I have never seen a good sized event where there wasn't something that you couldn't question. Mark Baker and Wallace Gussler have been frequent speakers at Martin's Station - fun to see them take (friendly) pokes at each other over bullet blocks. If you come, Mrs Coot & I will be at the sign of the Blue Cat - stop by & say hello.

I used to get in at Mansker Station and I will be attending the Fort Frederick Trade Faire in a month or so. I think I can handle the jury thing. However, every site has it's own hot buttons. One of the things that I want to know is whether there will be food vendors onsite. Not having to wait for the coffee in the morning is always a good thing.

Govan's Coffee House (yummy pasties) is normally in the vendor field and the local Ruritan?? club is normally set up with hot dogs & bbq just behind the modern visitor center (which has some good displays). There is nothing within walking distance off site. In the little town at the gap, there is a great country food menu in the old hardware? store - the basement room is often full of reenactors. Go thru the tunnel at the gap into a bigger town with groceries, fast food, etc. (got a new four way plug for our trailer there last year).
