I am seeing some beautiful hawks made from railroad spikes. What time period did these start showing up and where? Thanks, ET

Railroads weren't common until after the Gold Rush.

Railroad spike tomahawks would probably have looked like a railroad spike tied to a handle if one was ever used. If you had a forge, you could make one out of bar stock easier than a spike.

:agree: I think it was a bored blacksmith trying to find a use for old spikes. While they will work for the purpose, they are not the best choice because the stock is not big enough. I have used the HC ones (which are only medium carbon) and forged the spike head into the blade side of the hawk, then forge the end with the "spike" side into a brain spike. Makes for a nice small throwing ax but not much else.
