The rain slacked up enough this evening, I made an attempt to try and get a rabbit with the smoothbore. Of course when I got to the woods it picked back up. No rabbits, but I did get my first ever woodcock. North Louisiana.

Congratulations. I pursued woodcock when I was a kid in the UP. They are the most difficult bird I've ever hunted. Bagging one with your fowler is an accomplishment 👏.

For those who have never hunted woodcock, they are found in thick wet cover, typically explode almost underfoot and are gone in the blink of an eye.

My Brittany would point them but never would pick one up. Some dogs won't retrieve snipe either.

IMO, snipe are harder to hit than woodcock ... but woodcock are scarce and snipe are plentiful.
