What a wonderful, blustery day it was last Saturday when I went to the range with my new Walker. Ran about 36 lead balls through her; had to dissassemble and clean the cylinder pin after 24 rounds since she started binding on me. I am wondering if the extreme cold weather accelerated the binding, since bore butter becomes very hard at low temperatures.
At any rate, I was using 50 grains Pyrodex, a lubricated wad, and .45 cal .457 diameter lead balls, all ignited with No. 10 CCI caps. Not one single misfire; hits at 25 yards were registering all over the place on the silhoutte but tightened up as I got familiar with the Walker. My last 12 shots placed most of them within in a 10" radius, 1-2" above center of target.
Next time I go out, hopefully it will be warnmer and I will be able to tighten the groups up more, I will also want to try my hand with it at 50 yards. I bet she is right on at that range.
The small pistol grips were not rough on the wrist from the recoil, it seems that 50 grains of powder has no forceful effect on a 4 1/2 pound gun, though I was shooting from a benchrest position.
Took her home and then cleaned her up, that mainspring in the Walker is difficult to compress and get under the hammer's notch while you're trying to line up the backstrap and trigger guard all at the same time.
Truly an enjoyable afternoon. Looking forward to getting out to the range again....
Kindest Regards,
