Just shot a box of those .58cal Remington gold colored balls in my flinter...couldn't tell a bit of accuracy difference between them and Hornday's I normally shoot.
I was using .015" plain cotton patches instead of the .018" pillow ticking I normally use, yet the Remingtons seemed a little harder to start than the Hornady's, as if they might have run a little larger in diameter...or...if the gold coating somehow makes them harder, dunno...but they sure shot fine. Took 50 shots, used one flint, knapped it twice.

It was cool with low humidity and using 2F, I got more fouling than with 3F...so I decided to wipe between shots.
I used home made cleaning patches soaked in that Hoppe's BP Plus solvent I wanted to try and it's just fantastic!
Down and up with each side of the patch...did NOT dry patch...just poured in the next powder charge, and the bore stayed as clean and lubed as you'd want it to be.

I will also admit, after the recent discussions about accidental discharges, I did have a little more peace of mind after running a damp patch down bore between shots. (still didn't get my head over the muzzle tho!)

A great fall morning!!

Everything's cleaned up and put away...decided to mic the Remington .54cal/.530 balls...they mic 235-237...explains why they seemed a little harder to start!

I bought up a bunch of them (several boxes)a couple years ago on clearance at wal-mart. (.50 and .54 cal.) Only paid a dollar a box of a 100. Still have quite a few left. I know some people that don't like em' but I never have had a problem with them yet. Just as good for my purposes as the un-coated. (This year the wal-marts around here don't have the first box of any kind of roundballs for sale...hardly have anything thats not for inlines anymore).

Just saw my mistake...I meant to type:

.535"-.537"

Good Lord...another mistake!...I must have .54caliber on the brain.

I was shooting a .58cal...and the Remington .570 balls actually mic'ed .575-.577.

If the moderators would like to delete my previous two posts with the typos, please feel free to do so...sorry!

Well rounball, if there were anyone else shooting at the range, you could have confidentially bragged that you shoot only the best in your muzzleloader: gold balls! ::

Glad to see I'm not the only one here that gets tongue tied on a keyboard. :: I just pass it off to old age. :front:
