Took my .62cal "Full" jug choked Flint smoothbore to the range this morning...it was set up for my turkey load of magnum 6's, and I wanted to see how some 'chilled #5s" and some copper plated #4s would print for a squirrel load.
They both printed a small tight pattern at 30yds which will be devastating on a squirrel size target.
The magnum 5's also produced a decent pattern for squirrels at 40yds, with the copper plated 4's coming in a surprisingly close 2nd place to the #5 pattern inspite of the reduced pellet count of the #4s...speaks well for the copper plating and it seems to have worked exactly as advertised.
Then shot several very strong medium size metal soup cans at 30yds and both loads ripped right through them with 80grns Goex 3F, same powder charge I use for my turkey load.
So I didn't change a thing on the smothbore's setup other than the size of the shot itself, and since I have no other use for the copper plated #4s I'll use those for squirrels...save the #5s for wingshooting crows coming to decoys, etc.
Good stuff these Flintlock smoothbores...
