Took my .62cal "Full" jug choked Flint smoothbore to the range this morning...it was set up for my turkey load of magnum 6's, and I wanted to see how some 'chilled #5s" and some copper plated #4s would print for a squirrel load.

They both printed a small tight pattern at 30yds which will be devastating on a squirrel size target.

The magnum 5's also produced a decent pattern for squirrels at 40yds, with the copper plated 4's coming in a surprisingly close 2nd place to the #5 pattern inspite of the reduced pellet count of the #4s...speaks well for the copper plating and it seems to have worked exactly as advertised.

Then shot several very strong medium size metal soup cans at 30yds and both loads ripped right through them with 80grns Goex 3F, same powder charge I use for my turkey load.

So I didn't change a thing on the smothbore's setup other than the size of the shot itself, and since I have no other use for the copper plated #4s I'll use those for squirrels...save the #5s for wingshooting crows coming to decoys, etc.

Good stuff these Flintlock smoothbores...

Hey roundball, who did the jug choke for you.
I have a 12 gauge that I've been thinking about jug choking.
Did the jug choke on your gun make a lot of difference in your patterns? Thanks.

All the difference in the world...a load of #6s dropped a turkey in its tracks with a head shot at 40 yards, standing next to the Jake decoy I had placed at 40yds for a known distance reference...it's an excellent barrel for small targets like a turkey head / squirrel / trap target, etc...here's who did it for me:

Do you use a shot cup with the copper plated shot
or with all of your shot?

I don't use a shot cup with any of it...that's why I went ahead and had it jug choked...it was too much aggravation fooling with paper shot cups and seemed like 1 out of 10 would still go through the target like a slug no matter how careful I was...now it's just:

Pour in the Goex
Seat a Circle Fly 1/2" lubed cushion wad
Pour in the shot
Seat a Circel Fly OS card

The Jug Choke is one of the best $65 I've spent in muzzleloading...
