I wanted a range rod ,for my .36, and bought one that is synthetic, and it is really flexible, and I had sort of figured it would be like fiberglass. What's the deal? It's some sort of brown polymer rod, from Cain's Outdoors, anyone use one?
They make stainless, but I didn't think that would be all that good for the bore. How about using a muzzle protector? What do you guys use?

Yeah, muzzle protectors are important for protecting the crown and they work. I got my rod from a regular sporting goods store. Don't remember the brand, but it has a swivel handle and came with a protector. It's small enough for 22 cal rifles, but plenty stiff even for my 58 cal muzzleloaders.

Just get a t-handle and a muzzle guide put them in your pouch when you want a range rod put them on your ramrod, presto a range rod. So easy and no xtra rod to pack around.
Deadeye

I have a hickory 3/8" ramrod that's about 25 years old. I bet it's been down the bore of a gun 20,000 times.

I use a stainless steel rod, with a Delrin muzzle protector. The Stainless steel was chosen because of its very hard surface, which reduces the chance of fine grit sticking to its surface, while making it exceedingly easy to wipe down with a cleaning patch at the range, or in the field. The Muzzle Protector both protects the muzzle from wear, and CENTERS the rod in the barrel, helping to protect the lands. The jags I use are made of Brass, a softer metal than the steel in the barrel. In use, your fingers hold the Muzzle protector at the muzzle, while your other hand moves the rod in and out.

The net result is NO- I repeat---- NO wear to the muzzle nor the bore of a rifle. The Stainless steel rod also happens to be strong enough to use to pull bullets and balls on those occasions when I am distracted while loading, and forget to put powder UNDER the PRB! :cursing:

This of course results in another triumphant return to the Honorable Society of Dry-Ballers( I joined many years ago), a proud group of MLers who always welcome me back with a smile. Actually, the longer I stay away, the more testy the group becomes! :shocked2: :youcrazy: :rotf: :surrender: :hmm:

I have NO experience with the rod you describe, altho I have seen and used a similar product that T/C sold. I don't like HOW FLEXIBLE they are, but to each his own. It feels like I am trying to push a rope down a small bore when I try to use it on any subcaliber, like your .36.

With modern steel barrels muzzle wear from ramrod use is largely a figment of imagination. When barrels were made of soft iron, it could be a problem.

Order yourself a 1/4" Durango Rod ( with the non-rotating handle) from TOTW. Best range/cleaning rod money can buy.

I have a brass range rod for my .36. I wanted a rod made of metal that was softer than the steel of my rifle barrel. I don't use a muzzle protector, rather use my fingers to guide the rod up and down the bore. It's not perfect and I wouldn't detract from anyone using a bore protector, especially if they use a SS rod.

I make my own out of brass or ss rod ,fit a straight handle and not a t handle though, they have been banned on our ranges since a guy lost most of his right hand.I have a seperate rod for each gun that i use on the range.

I have some, these were from mountain state muzzleloading(remember them) before cains took over. They work ok but something rigid is better.I had one break as I was loading and hit me in the nose on a very cold day at the Buckskinners club winter shoot(squeeze up or freeze up) in Moncton N B Canada, so so much for unbreakable! Stay away from fiberglass, you might get splinters. SS or brass is way better.

I have been using one of these for my long rifles for 20 years or so. They work great.

The long stainless rod is a little awkward to use on my shorter barreled rifles. They are all .50 and above so I built a hickory 7/16" range rod with a pinned threaded brass tip, Palm Pleaser handle and brass muzzle protector.

I remember 'em, (MSM), that's the same people that own it now, they've had it back for a few years now and are doing well. Been going there for over 30 years off and on.
