I have been looking at all the great stuff you guys have made for quite awhile and finnally decided to post a few myself. Here are a couple of rawhide sheaths that I recently finished. Hope you like them

I've only used rawhide to line my sheaths, and with our without it, my sheaths have never turned out as nicely as yours. Well done!

I have found that if you don't mind working with the wet slimy stuff that its pretty easy to work with.

And thank you both for your comments

I suspect there's rawhide and then there's rawhide. I've only worked with it from soaked out rawhide dog bones, and that stuff was generally real thin. Nice for lining sheaths, but..... Thickness varied a lot too.

I'm betting I'm missing a lot for not buying a good grade, rather than using the stuff only fit for dog toys.

I have three knives by Chuck Burrows with rawhide sheaths..I think Chuck uses deer rawhide..

I think Chuck uses different kinds of rawhide according to what thickness he wants. I know I have seen some out of elk and cattle.
I did find out the hard way that beading directly on the rawhide is a real bear and when it dries it shrinks so the beading kind of got bunched up some.

Just my thoughts but I would say that dog toys would really be hard to work with.

You have to soak enough bones to disappoint a lot of dogs to get any worthwhile pieces. Lots of scrap and junk wrapped in them, kind like cheap rolled cigars.

I sorted and dried the pieces from half a dozen and keep them on hand for small projects, but have vowed to buy or make decent stuff in the future.

Here is a little neck knife csae I made about 14 years ago. It is elk and is about 1/16 th thick. We were all just sittin around the fire at our fall vous and I cut this one out and sewed it together with sinew

I usually do the rawhide outer with a leather liner but that is according to what its purpose is and how heavy it suould be.

Rawhide is pretty cheap compared to tooling leather and easy to find because of its many uses.

Yep, you just cut whatever pattern floats yer stick before you dip the whole thing in the aging dye of your choice. In this case the antique look was dye made from boiled whole green pecans.

Just don,t cut to deep or leave the sheath in the dye to long. Of course you can just brush on the dye also.

Thank you sir.
I don't have anything in process right at the moment but its so blamed hot down here I may just fire up the cooler in the shop and get something started. Its sure to hot to be outside much.
