My first ML was a Traditions Deer Hunter. I've shot a few deer with it and I still like the little gun. I don't like it's styling. I don't like the rubber butt plate, the lack of an underbarrel rib, lack of fore-end cap and the pot metal ramrod pipe and trigger guard. What exactly is it a replica of anyway? Pedersoli has a Country Hunter that they describe as "short, simple and manageable rifle was the favorite gun of the American farmers." Is there any other historic info on these types of guns?

I wouldn't mind dressing mine up a little and making it more authentic with some new furniture or re-doing it altogether. It might be neat to get a full length stock for it from TOTW and cut it off to make some sort of PA scout/carbine. Can that be done by a novice? How hard is it to get stocks with lock, trigger and barrel inletting that fit?

It can be done, but you're looking at a lot of work. There won't be a stock that is pre-inlet to fit your parts, so plan 'B' might consist of a stock that is roughly inlet for your barrel dimensions, and go from there.
FYI, I replaced the rubber butt plate on my Traditions Pioneer with a shotgun butt plate from TOW. My first attempt at inleting and it worked rather well.
