Took out my .54 Renegade to the range today an shot both .530 rb and .54 Lyman Great Plain bullet, 425 grains. Both shot good out of this early Renegade barrel. My son in law has been having bear trouble with the sweet corn at his farm here in Vermont.
I wanted something bigger than roundball, and was able to pick up one box of these GP bullets.
90 grains of Swiss 1 1/2 F and an overpowder wad did the trick.

The range was 75 yards. The first two shot low with my usual 6 o'clock hold. Raised the sight a touch and the next two were as good as I can do. If I go back to rb for deer, I'll have to hold a little lower.
Now I will try to find more Lyman .54 GP bullets, I heard they were discontinued?

Roughly where in VT do you live?. I have friends in Underhill and have been their a couple of times. Beautiful this time of the year.

We don’t get bear trouble here in Devon. Grockles are our main pests, trouble is they are never in season so shooting them is always frowned on😈

Does the Lyman mold drop the same Great Plains conical as Hornady was selling? Regardless maybe it’s time to get into casting, 15-16 conicals for $1 or 2, and you’ll never have to worry about availability. It’s what got me into casting

My buddy has a place in Andover, Vermont, just outside of Chester.
Made alot of deer and Turkey hunting trips up there over the years. Beautiful country.

Sorry, the bullets are Hornady, I have 11 shots left, then I will go back to rb. Does anyone have a lead bullet suggestion? Its a shame Hornady stopped making these, they shoot great. I live in conservative Southern Vermont.

Not sure if they started production again but Buffalo Bullets makes good conicals. I use the 385gr in a 50 1-28 GM barrel. Years back someone had cases of 720 for $40 on ebay. Shipping was more than the bullets......thats a lot of lead

Their website is not working?

Where are You in Vt? I have a place in Pownal

I have a fast twist 54 GM barrel in one of my Renegades. I have a stash of 425gr GP bullets I use 90gr Goex FF.

Also have a 58 Lyman 1-48 twist, have a stash of 525gr GP bullets for that, 90gr FF for that too. Those are way overkill for whitetails but good bear medicine

TOTW has Lyman molds for 450gr Plains bullets that look the same as the Hornady. I suspect they might not be hollow point? I think I have one that a friend gave me, I'll have to have a look to check the shape.

Mold Lyman .54 caliber, 450 grain Plains bullet mold, single cavity, steel blocks only - Track of the Wolf
