A friend just found me two pounds of Dupont 3f blackpowder. I have always used Pyrodex in my TC White Mountain Carbine, 50 cal, will the 3f work? I know it doesn't degrade over time like Pyrodex, can I store it outside in my shed? its dry but this is Vermont and sometimes the temp gets 20 below zero, then up to 90 in the summer, Any advise on using and storing 3f blackowder appreciated. Thanks, Craig.

It will work great in your gun.
It will store fine in your shed.
3F is roughly equivalent to Pyrodex P. Load accordingly by volume.
DuPont usta be the best according to some. I bet you'll like it.
Save the empty cans! There are folks who collect them.

Yep - I have never used anything other than 3F in real black in all the way up to 54 cal.

Black is somewhat difficult to come by for me so having a "one powder fits all" solution helps.

Just start by reducing your "typical" load by 10-15% (say 70 grains instead of 80 or whatever) and give it a go.

I'm new at this and hadn't heard about Pyrodex degrading. How long is it good for? I bought some Pyrodex last fall that I was planning to use in the spring. I keep it stored in a shed which is cold most of the winter.

I always hear that Pyrodex degrades with age but have not had that experience. Bought several really old open paper cans of Pyrodex at a gun show years back and it went bang and shot fine as far as I could tell. May have not been as potent as when new but seemed fine to me.

I've never had a problem either with old pyrodex..... :idunno: Guess we must be doing something right and the others are doing something wrong.... :haha:

I tried some in both rifle and pistol grade some years back and found it clumped up in the container and powder flasks I had.
Once the clumps were broken up it seemed to shoot fine but corroded the brass flasks like 60.
I finally gave up on both grades as it would not light off as reliably as black powder in cold weather.
I still have some of it left in a can around here somewhere.

To answer your question:
That DuPont bp will not degrade. Just store in a dry location.
But, know this: Save the cans. DuPont cans have become collectibles. And there are some old timers who would trade their souls to have some genuine DuPont powder again to shoot.
