How do these seem to work for folks? I'm wondering if any one has shot them in a 1:21 .50 White Mountain Carbine. Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving!

IMO REAL's are the most picky bullets out there. I have one barrel they shoot fairly well out of. It's a 1:32 Lyman GPH. They shoot best unlubed or lubed with liquid alox and absolutely must have a lubed wad underneath for any accuracy at all.

Others results vary but I'm not overly impressed with them.

I just got some in the mail 380 grain in 54 cal from cheap shots I intend to try them out of my plains pistol I will post my results. Maybe later out of my renegade, I hear they do not do great out of tc guns.

I decided to try some that i cast in my .50 cal New Englander today after i could not get it to group well with rd balls no matter what i tried. The REAL's shot REAL well in it. I put 8 of them in a group about 1 1/2" center to center and that was using both 90 grs of RS and 80 grs of P Pyrodex. Didn't have any real black powder to try with them but if they shoot as well with it i would be happy. Didn't use a wad under them either. This was at about 40 yds.

I have a mold for the .50 size and tried and tried to get them to shoot in a 1:48" twist T/C. 4" at 50 yards or worse. I tried stout, medium and light loads, half dozen grease lubes, with over powder wads and without.

Like a lot of bullets, or even balls, they shoot in some guns but not in others. Same rifle throws round balls into cloverleafs at 50 yards with my hunting load so I stopped trying. The mold has two cavities, one round ball one R.E.A.L. And I also learned I like steel molds better than aluminum ones from that experience.

I know they shoot well in my old Pedersoli Alamo rifle, 1 in 48 shallow rifling 50 cal. They are lubed heavy with tallow/beeswax and seated on a dry, 1/4" felt over powder wad and pushed out the open end with 60 grains of fffg Goex. Keeps them in about 2" at 50 yards depending on the performance of the trigger release mechanism.

Hold on tight. That's one heck of a bullet to be shooting from a Plains Pistol.

Wrap a couple of padded bandaids around the back of the trigger guard! That will keep it from raising knots on your middle finger under recoil! About 60 grains of P under a 385 in a Kentucky is interesting!

I was thinking of starting with 30 up to a max of 50 we will see what happens or when I stop. hopefully before I crack a stock.

Brik:

I used the Lee, 380gr, .54, R.E.A.L. in my Lyman GPR-Hunter 1:32 for several years with consistent accuracy results, specifically at 100yds.

This summer I changed to the nicely pointed Lyman, 425gr, .542 hollowed based Minie projectile.

Ironically the same 90gr of PyrodexRS produced increased velocity and an even tighter group.

Even though I'm not real thrilled with additional knockdown power on my end of the rifle, it should prove to be a great hunting load.

Osage

Both 54 cal REALs proved a little fiddly in my rifles, but with some testing I found great load combos with each. Use pure, pure, pure (did I mention PURE?) lead. Experiment with lubes, and try the lubed felt patch underneath.

I probably wouldn't buy a replacement mold for either if I ruined or lost it, because my pard's Lyman 548657 works so much better without fiddling. In 50 cal I'd bet the same for the Lyman 508656.

I'm experimenting with the REAL in my .50 1-48 twist with promising reults so far. 72 gr 2F and felt was under and well greased slug.

In my two TC Hawkens rifles a 50 and a 54 the LEE REAL bullets shoot ok. I like to use them for plinking & etc. Most of my groups are almost as good as I get with the rifles pefered load. My 54 REAL is a 300 gr and the 50 REAL is a 250 gr.

Trapper - do you cast the REAL's for your .50? if so I'm interested in swapping some 320's for 250's for experiments sake.
