I bought an old style T/C Renegade .50 this morning at a gunshow for $80. The barrel had 6 holes drilled in it for scope mounts, everything else was in excellent shape. I don't buy traditional muzzleloaders that have been drilled for scopes but I made an exception in this case because of how new everything else was.

Thinking about having the undrilled part of the barrel cut off and rebreeched to make a "hoss pistol" out of. Any recommendations on who could do that?

Google:

Dennis McCandless
Custom Breeching Shop
Los Cruces, NM

Track of the Wolf recommended him to me and he's now built custom fitted Patent Breech breech plugs on a half dozen Flint barrels for me, each less than $100.

If you're going to stay with the same hooked breech design, send him the barrel, he'll remove the existing plug, cut off whenever amount of barrel you want, re-thread the back end of the barrel and reinstall the breechplug.

He's built muzzleloaders and in particular a couple of ML pistols...he could add sights if you needed too...you might give him a call

the twist rate is way too slow for a pistol. it would have to be around 1-20 for a .50.

Why not get the correct size machine screws, cut em off, peen them, file and re blue or brown the barrel? Problem solved.

I would just put some slave screws in the holes and keep on shooting it. You never know when you want to sell it and they actually like the scope mounts. Any gun dealer will have slave screws to fit it.

The twist rate is too slow for a pistol.

I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder as to whether or not the barrel would be "ruined". To me modern scopes on traditional style rifles "ruins" them. Repurposing a barrel, that I'm not going to use, for another project I'm interested in seems like a good thing to me.

I've never had a lot of luck target wise with my Lyman Plains pistol and think a longer barrelled "hoss pistol" might work better for me.

Jed,
TC uses a 11/16X20 thread on their breach plugs. Good luck finding a tap, or someone with a tap. If you are going to cut the barrel anyway, re-thread it for a standard breach plug and fit the hooked breach,

Will the twist rate be ok for a much shorter barrel?
There is no need for a fast twist in a pistol barrel.
Rifle twists will work fine once a load is worked up.
