I've looked at scores of rifles and I have hardly to never seen a rectangular patchbox lid rivet, Myself, I use them exclusively, they require more time, but I find them to be better because they won't turn on you.I prefer the York School which some of the makers used, but none of the other schools had any that I've seen so far.Does any body out there use this type rivet, or am I adrift alone on the Sea of Lancaster students?

I have gone to square shanked latches for patchboxes. I used to make them out of a nail and turn them in my drill motor and solder them in. With the square shank I just peen them and don't have to bother with soldering anymore.

George,
I rivet the patch box lid with square shanked rivets as well but by countersinking and peening it over it will look round.
Here is a picture of a York rifle I recently finished that shows what I am trying to explain.
