Ok, here goes what I’m sure will be one of my biggest regrets. My wife and I are building a small cabin on our little 40 acre spread so I need some funds so here it goes. This is a beautiful original and unmolested English SXS in 17 bore!!! This was built by Edward Middleton in Birmingham and is simply stunning! It is light and nimble at 6lbs 12oz on my scale!! Starting with the barrels are a fine twist with no dings or dents. Light pitting noted in the bores near the muzzle both chambers are remarkably clean. Barrels are solid and ring like church bells indicating they are still securely solders together. Barrels have not been cut or altered. Front sight is a simple brass bead. Nipples are patent and are not frozen. Barrel to stock fit is extremely tight! Barrel wedge is pinned in place and can not be lost. They measure 31” OAL
The stock is next and is quite remarkable! Has never been sanded or refinished, and wares a nice oil finish. Checkering is crisp and clean, not flattened. Inlay is top notch, truly stunning! Lock mortises are perfect and have no chipping or gaps. Perhaps the most remarkable part of the stock is the very modern stock dimensions! LOP to front trigger is 14 1/4 to center of stock. Drop at the comb is just under 1 1/2 inches and drop at heal is 3 1/4 inches! There is a slight cast off (for right handed shooter). The buttstock is capped with a hand carved horn plate that is perfectly fit and inlet with a widows peak!
The locks and hardware are next up and are just as nice! Every piece of metal is perfectly fit and finely engraved. The screws are also all engraved and perfectly timed. Most hardware has a very pleasant patina with signs of case color hardening remaining on most parts. Now the locks!!! Simply stunning and both function perfectly. Half and full **** work as they should. Both hammers are even at half and full ****. Hammers are very nicely fit with no wobble of the tumbler. The interior of the locks still have vibrant case color and the parts are nicely polished. Both locks have very intricate engraving and are both engraved Edward Middleton and IXL on the back of the locks. Barrels are a nice plumb brown and have a a well done band engraved at the breach.
Issues, there are two that I can find. First and the most obvious is the missing ramrod this will be a fairly easy fix. The next is the missing sling swivel that was solders on the middle ramrod thimble and is now missing, all that remains is some left over solder.
This gun is quite outstanding for its age and I will truly regret selling even as I’m typing this I want to keep it but a cabin on my own land is my priority at the moment. I have fired it and it functions perfect my charge was 50gr powder with 90gr by volume of shot. I bought this as my rabbit and quail gun but as I said priorities…
I am asking 1500 shipped OBO. PayPal friends and family or ad 3% for goods and services. Please if you have any questions do not hesitate to PM me and I will send my phone number. I have taken a ton of photos please look at them and make a judgment of your own!
Thanks for looking!
