Bought a bag that has a bright white strap. What can you use to change its color that won't stain you or your clothes afterward? GrampaJ in NC

All dyes require you use a " MORDANT" with the dying or after the fabric is dyed to "SET" the dye. There are lots of mordants. Vinegar is perhaps the most common. Look up the term on your computer, and learn more.

I actually prefer coffee to tea. It gives it a little different color that I like better. Take yesterday's leftover coffee and let is sit a few days to get really rank. Soak your cotton in it till it's a few shades darker than you want, remembering that it's going to lighten up once it dries. Let it dry to "set" the color, then soak it overnight in plain water to get rid of any excess.

Heck, I've got plain white shirts left from my executive days that have coffee stains persisting after years of my wife's best efforts with bleach and swear words.

Use hot to a boil tan or brown (your color choice)RIT dry and let cool, then soak item for at least two to three hours. Rinse in a bucket of luke warm water with a 1/2 cup of white vinegar added....soak again for 1 hour and throw in your washer with cold water for final rinse. DO NOT DRY IN CLOTHES DRIER, but hang to dry.
