Hey all

I have a Spanish Hawken clone which has a cheesy looking clear coat on it with plenty of deep scratches on it from the previous owner.
I'm really thinking about taking the clear coat off and doing a simple linseed oil finish.

Would there be a good solvent for this, or would sanding it all off be preferable?

Thanks
Iain

I just did one with Klean-Strip Premium Stripper. It took less than 30 minutes. I wouldn't sand it. I prefer Formby's or Minwax Satin Tung Oil Finish, it will dry before you are too old to shoot it.

Brasilikill I did a TC Hawken in 82 with linseed oil and white gas. it is still looking good. But your hawken is not walnut so you won't get the same color unless you stain. I have a old Mt CVA Brand new made in USA never shot that I am going to do the Vinegar Stain on,its been working 6Mos. Do a search for the post here. I did one CVA with walnut hulls in fall,it came out a yellow color, used linseed oil afterwards.Never did know what CVA used for wood, kinda like a oak? Dilly

Hey all

Thanks for your responses! The pics are quite nice as well.

I think I will go for the Klean strip, or something similar, whatever is available at Home Depot. I got the rifle for free, so I'm not too worried about it.....I just want it to look rough and "old-timey"

I did find it on the Ardesa site, and they do say it is walnut, but to my eyes (I work w/ domestic and exotic lumber every day) It's grained more like mahogany than walnut, but I could be wrong.....I'll have a much better idea when I strip it down.

CVA from what I've seen uses Beech for their guns.....

Thanks again......I'll take pics when I'm done

That's a pretty nice looking Hawken style gun. I don't try to get the scratches out when I refinish a gun. They just give it charcter to me. If you can get some Fiebing's Med. or Dark Brown Leather Dye to stain it with, it works fine.

CVA used American maple on their Mountain Rifles. Don't know what on their others. Probably European beech.

I believe the American Maple was used on the early Mountain Rifles which were made in the U.S.A.. The later Mountain Rifles which were made in Spain were stocked with ??? (I think it 's the same wierd wood the other Spanish guns have.)

The single barrel shotgun on that page looks very interesting. I looked up their only US distributor. That is Traditions. I called them. They only sell the Ardessa products that are made specifically for Traditions. All of their traditional line are apparently made by Ardessa including the Crockett. When I asked about the actual Ardessa models, they said they don't handle them. Ok, if there is no US distributor, how do you get one of their guns?

Klean-Strip works good. Here is link to a TC I just refinished. (with pic links)
