what nipples do the Lyman Remington 1858 New Model Army, take I bout one set the thread was right ,but there to short to fire the cap!
Also how much clearance should there be between the face of the hammer and the nipple?

Call the good people at Track of the Wolf and they will be able to help you out with the nipple situation. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/index.aspx

As strong as the springs for the hammers are on my Remington's I don't have any problem with the hammers setting off the caps.

The hammer should hit the nipple, zero clearance.

They should be m6x.75 and TOW sells one that's slightly longer than standard by about .019" I believe.

That's not true. It's not usual to see them that way from the Italians - they'd rather they hit the nipple than have a cap not go off - but the hammer is supposed to stop just short of the nipple. Don't know the exact distance offhand but think half the thickness of the cap.

Isn't hitting and mushrooming the nipple the reason all manufacturers recommend against dry firing?

Well the .58s have a frame stop for a shoulder on either side of the hammer nose to engage. This batters down over time and may need to have the hammer nose adjusted for just kissing the top of the nipple. If it don't make slight contact with the nipple it will not be as reliable as it could be made to be.
Nipple heights are not that uniform from different makers so the hammer nose needs looked at when replacements are installed and periodically anyway, with use. Mike D.

Yes along with battering the hammer shoulders in close frame guns. The open tops often use the hammer nose extension on top to stop against the nipple shoulder. Mike D.

Again, given the level of tuning these things receive they typically do hit. But it doesn't mean they're supposed to. You'll see a lot of the people running Colts or who have tuned their revolvers bitching about this in dry firing threads for this very reason.
