I was at a local store and found these lead balls 50 cal. on sale made by remington. They have a gold tint to them but they say that they are lead. They are soft as lead and some people at my gun club use and like them. I was wondering if anyone has any information on them. I was on the remington page and could not find anything on them, nor was any of my searches able to find any information. These were "VERY" cheap, in fact so cheap if they are truly soft lead that I can melt it would be cheaper to buy these and melt them to the caliber that I want.

They are good quality lead balls put out under the Remington name with that gold colored film wash added on them...seems like it was an attempt by Remington to cash in on the worry several years ago about "lead contamination", so they marketed these as safer to handle, etc.
They're excellent balls made by one of the big name outfits like Hornady or Speer...if it's a bargain price, I'd buy all I could afford.
Unfortunately, Remington also gave away how little they knew about muzzleloading when they included a benefit listed in their advertisement that (this will also eliminate "leading" from the round ball traveling down the barrel".

I have been searching some more and the only information is a post on another meb page saying that it is a thin copper film that makes them gold in color. This is not an offical statement from remington so I take it with a grain of salt. It does not matter because for $0.97 a box of a hundred you just can't loose. I figured I could use them for my fifty cal. and melt the rest for my smoothbore 62 cal. :front:

Just a side FYI:
Three .490's in a paper shot cup out of my .62cal smoothbore group 4-5" at 40yds if you ever had need or desire for such a load

They are good quality swaged balls, but generally overpriced. The gold color is a gimmick. There is even a cute ad campaign about turning lead into "gold" implying winning.

I still prefer to cast my own.

He-Bear,
I live just down the ole RT23 from Columbus and would like to know where you found those, if you don't mind?
I have a card of twenty that I found last year and thought they seemed like they would be okay. At that price I would like to buy enough to see if I liked them.
Thanks,

I got them at Gander Mountain there at 256 and 70. Unfortunately I bought all they had, for that price I could not turn it down. I figured that I would donate some to my club for prizes and sell some to the members of the club. I was told that this Gander Mountain sells them there for about $2.00 -$3.00 a box sometimes. When I saw the price I could not believe it and got a price check and they said yes, that is $0.97 a box. On top of that they gave me 5% discount for buying them in the case. :front:
