I have a Pietta 1858 in 44 caliber. Finally got new stainless steel nipples on it and it shot great for about 40 shots without a single cap falling off. During the last cylinder full I noticed that the cylinder wasn't turning and I had to turn it by hand to finish off the shots. It locked up great but wouldn't turn.

I assume that the hand and spring are done for. I know I saw some bright ideas here on how to "fix" the hand spring. I am going to order a couple of hand and springs for both my 1858s and a couple of trigger springs.

Anyway, since I have one Pietta and one Armisport 1858, I was wondering what kind of experiences does anyone have in repairing the hand spring in a repro Remington 1858. Also what kind of repair parts should I keep on hand for these 6 shot coal burners.

I put a new hand and spring in my old Pietta 1858 Target model. Cabela's used to have the parts kit with a spare hammer, hand, and all screws and other springs for $25 or so. It just takes a bit of patience to fit the hand. I didn't bother with trying to replace the spring, but in retrospect, that might be a quicker option. I have the part, so may get around to trying that one day.

I use bobby pins, set in place with a drop of solder. Out-perform and outlast the originals. Cheap, too....
