Just got a very well used Pietta Navy Arms Target Model Remington 1858. Beautiful arm, only problem is it won't fire when I cock the hammer and then pull the trigger. It only fires when I pull the trigger first and then thumb or fan the hammer. What's the deal? Weak mainspring? Due too missing mainspring screw? Any Ideas?

I'm 99% sure that your missing mainspring screw is the root of your problems.
The screw is what adjusts the spring tension which makes the hammer fall......The tighter your spring, the harder the hammer hits and vice versa

If you have no mainspring screw, then I imagine that would be why you're experiencing these problems

Hope this helps

Thank you so much for answering my no-brainer question so quickly, Brasilikilt. I couldn't wait for a screw to come in the mail, but I was able to improvise. I used a wedge sort of set-up to adjust the spring tension and now she busts those caps every time!
