I was told that the screw threads are made to interlock. same as if you put a 3 rd generation colt single action barrel on a 2nd generation colt. the treads are just slightly different and are lock up. will not come out after would.
 
I just got out of the shop after cutting off the offending portion with the band saw. Actually only about .75 was required. I think I have a contact with a lathe to true the breech face, then drill and tap to new specs. Probably will make a patent breech and use the old bolster, but other possibilities exist, all of which will cost more than it's worth. But guess that's part of the process. :(

Take a look at that clip I posted for ya.
The original bolster has been indexed,, drilled from the muzzle after install and then taped for the nipple at the proper angle.
 
I saw where a machinist rebreeched a CVA. He actually made his own breech that extended back enough to remake it the original length. I believe there is a name for this type of breech system but the name escapes me for the moment. He posted pictures and did a very good job.
