For all the experienced steel men out there, I wondered if there was a simple product or method I could use to remove stains from the blade of a knife.

It's a basic 3/4" x 5.5" blade antler handle hunting knife with what appears to be a stainless steel blade (flat gray color) that I bought as a young man back in the 60's, and still have it. It was a decent knife bought in a local sporting goods store, but nothing compared to high quality knife standards today.

Retired it years and years ago and it lays in the back of a drawer, clean and dry...in studying it recently trying to figure out something to use it for, I wondered if there's some way to remove some faint stains / slightly darker areas in places on the blade that it acquired in it's lifetime...won't come off with steel wool...it's not rust, just a few small, slightly darker areas, streaks, etc.

Is there any chemical or something that might do the job?

I use a product called "Flitz". A very mild abrasive - be warned that it will remove etchings and colorants used in the "Case XX" logo. It leaves a mirror finish with a hand rubbed cloth applicator. I use it on all my knives ( and "in the white" guns).
