Has anybody here rendered any Bear fat?
All I've been told, is that if I do it in
the house,my Wife will more than likely
divorce me.

Can't speak to bear fat, but a friend and I rendered some beaver fat by putting the fat trimmings in a heavy pan on a Coleman stove and letting her just cook until she wasn't yielding any more liquid. Said liquid was poured off through a strainer and the "cracklins" went to the cats. I keep mine in the freezer, as it is mostly liquid at room temp and can go rancid.
 
Haven't tried it myself, but hope to soon. This is some advice I got on another board. All credit (or blame) goes to Dave in WI. Esp. note the second paragraph-there must be something to that, eh?

My goal in rendering bear fat down is getting the oil since I read so much about it being used as a patch lube in days of old. I was told many things about rendering, like boil it good to get all the water out otherwise it would turn rancid, and that it would not last long in general. This information was word of mouth, but not from people who were doing it. It gave me a starting point but turned out not to be good information. I will try and pass on what I have learned from trial and error. I am still learning and this is not the final word.
