Beginning research into guns that were primarily used in the NE part of Pennsylvania, 1840-1870 era. Can anyone refer any books that might contain helpful information as to "usual" type of lock (flint or percussion), barrel length(smooth or rifled), bore size, full or half stock, etc. I have cheked with a historical society in one county, but this is kind of specific for them to be of much help. Appreciate any book titles or references I can look into re: this. Thank you

Those dates span the Civil war of course and that brought in huge developments in arms. I'm sure that like everywhere else men returning from the battle feilds brought home a mix of plunder.

I mean it was from Flint/Percussion conversion smoothbore Potsdam Muskets through the Enfield, Springfield Breechloaders and all the way too the Spencer repeating rifle.

Finding when and where men in that area served in the Civil war might give hints as to how they where armed.

Joe check out the museum over in Belfast Pa.(near Allentown) at the Henrys of Bolton homestead. they have an awsome display of Pa guns from all over as well as the NE,plus all kinds of original asserories, they should be able to give either info your looking for or run you towards where to get it. it is worth every penny if ya haven't been there. The other place to ask is Dixon's over near Kempton Pa, it is blackpowder heaven wrapped up in a gun shop, either Chuck or Greg should be able to help ya if they are available(both museum n shop have a web site) Just some thoughts YMHSBirdman
