I haven't even started on the Jager yet, but already I'm thinking of the next project.
I plan to restock my pedersoli .32 "kentucky rifle" Although I love the gun, and it has some pretty nice wood, the stock and lock are rediculously small. My thought is to keep the barrel, ramrod and pipes, and possibly the lock.
I almost hate to do this as it is a very accurate rifle, and I've taken quite a few squirrels and rabbits with it. I just hate how short the pull is, and the wrist is really tiny. It feels like a really heavy toy (the barrel is 13/16" straight sided octagon,) especially after carrying my bess around. I looked at a couple of precarved stocks from track, and really like the "beck rifle." Minus the parts I already have, the parts I need end up in the $350 range (this includes a Small siler)
I can't decide if I should do this, or just build a new one altogeather. I have a sentimental attachment to it, cause It's the first flint rifle I've ever built. (was a pedersoli kit)
I could always give it to one of my boys when they're big enough to carry it..
Any thoughts?
Cheers,
:hmm:

i've got a pedersoli 36 and you're right. the lock is tiny.
but it works and a bigger lock "might" look out of place.
swapped for it with a dear friend who is off shooting in another place.
mine will stay the way it is just cuz of the memories. but i've been looking at some of those TOTW long rifle kits. they look pretty sweet but i don't know it they'll work any better than what i have ... and mine's still making new memories.

Dunno, once a rifle has become "family', well I keep it and go on to another to "adopt"

I've got a 45 Pedersoli flint Kentucky and love it too - my first BP rifle, and have gone through all my teething on it - but agree with some of the reasoning for moving on. I wanted it from the outset really as a starter gun and always imagined I would move on to a Chambers or TOTW kit once I had the experience.
My biggest problem too is size - I'm 6'5" with ape arms and find the stock way too small.
The lock is small, but I don't have much worry about this as it works well for me with good English flints.
Despite the stock size I'll keep my gun as it is rather than restock it, as I know how to shoot it well despite the limitations (plus sentimental attachment to my first BP gun), and build a completely new kit next.

I'd keep the .32 as is and build another rifle entirely. The parts you plan to salvage from the Pedersoli don't add up to much money and the rifle as-is would be worth more than the savings on parts, especially if you kind-of-like-it. :m2c:

Sounds like it already is a perfect rifle for a kid. Save up you piggy bank and buy an entire kit. You said that you know and trust the rifle, so you can use your knowledge to get your boy off to a good start. If he bangs it up, you have already got your money's worth.
