Boy, my small siler lock loves these flints. The first one went over 80 strikes. After a little tweaking on the lock I have over a 100 strikes and still going on the present one. If you havn't tried them you are missing out on a great flint and a great price.

Already bought two dozen from Rich and I totally agree. They are just as good as any English flints and you can't beat his prices. The next time I need to order more flints, I'm going back to Rich   .

Yeah man!

Ordered a dozen after reading about them here. My lock is an old style T/C, a known flint-eater from what I understand. This was true with four other types/brands of gunflints I tried in the past few months, but it apparently has no appetite for Missouri chert. Tried about half of the baker's dozen he sent me to see how they sparked, and all were hotter than anything else I've tried. Picked the worst looking of the bunch & clamped it in for shooting... 36 shots later, I swear it hasn't changed in performance or appearance one bit. Not grooving the frizzen either.

Had my mind made up to send the lock to T/C for replacement after Ky muzzleloading seasons, but now I'm not so sure.

Where can we get some of these critters to try?

What type of material are they made of? How are they different than english or french flints? Might be dumbs questions, but can't learn if you don't ask.

They are Missouri flint that Rich finds and then knaps to shape and size. As he describes them, they are rough, tough and sparky...
Good flints at a good price. I have bought a few dozen over the years and like them a lot.

I read about Rich and his flints on this site , I had just got a new flintlock rifle that came with one flint after it started getting rounded and a couple of misfires I emailed Rich .I think he returned my email in less than a day, got my info and sent me a dozen in about 2 days with a little letter explaining his products and payment info buy the way what he charged me for a dozen flints I could have bought 2 or 3 flints at my local supplier . Nothing but praise for that guy don't hesitate to email him .

bp junky,
Rich is a dream to order from and offers
top quality flints. You order them and he has them in the mail before the ink is dry on your
money order or check.
If you have a complaint he will address it
immediately and to your satisfaction...IMHO
snake-eyes :hatsoff:

They are not flint. These are knapped from Burlington Chert which is found in the midwest.
I have found them to work very well in all my
flinters.
If you use a diamond file to keep the edge sharp
and even you can get a very long life out of these
rocks.

You were missed in Brady this week.

Ralph and Shirley are fine.

My "Geogeek" wife informs me that chert is pretty much the same as flint...
Out here the "Flint Hills" of Kansas are actually chert hills but "flint" sounds better I guess...

I was taught that flint is actually a subset of chert, which is a broader classification. Flint is chert which occurs in chalk and limestone formations.

After reading about Rich's flints here, I decided to give 'em a try. I emailed Rich, he answered back right away with his billing policy. I sent my mailing address and he responded that my flints would be mailed the next day. It's good to know that we have a quality knapper here that has flints in ready supply.

Seeing the reference to resharpening them with a diamond file, I'm guessing they don't knapp like an english...are there other ways to resharpen them that are as effective as using a diamond file?

Rounball, they knap pretty well they seem a little less brittle than an english.I got a DMT xtra coarse diamond file and it makes quick work to straighten the edge then tick the edge to make it scary sharp.I got mine from Rich a month or so back and was impressed to say the least! Took a mizzy wheel to take some of the humps off if they had any and sure enough they throw a heck of a spark.Nice to know there is a supplier that is sort of local with a great product!.Ray
