I've got a Loyalist Arms 1st model Bess that I am satisfied with as an entry level musket for F&I events. I am plagued by the crazy notion of upgrading to a 1742 pattern Long Land Bess put together by a competent builder using the Rifle Shoppe parts. :youcrazy:

Would anyone care to recommend a builder?

What is the probability of getting a parts kit with an assembled lock inside of 2 years?

I have a TRS 1742 built by John Bosch in Massachusetts. He built it on spec over last winter. The basic musket is great. The building is good but not perfect. The butt plate needs a little work, the lock parts could use some more polishing, and the ramrod hits the front lockscrew. But then he researched and applied all the appropriate proof and inspection marks of a musket from that particular year. That makes it an extra special piece for a serious reenactor.
I think the Rifle Shop parts are good if you have the skill to use them well.

Don't ya just love that massive banana shaped lock! You might say that the long land is the gun that won North America for the english speaking crowd. How long did it take to get the parts? Did John or the Shoppe temper and assemble the lock component castings?

Track of the Wolf has all the parts for a 1742 Long Land pattern bess with the lock dated 1746 "Willets" .I think it all cost like 850.00. I have seen a 1742 pattern built with Track of the Wolfs parts, and it really builds into a nice Bess, and the parts are as good if better than the RS parts are. I just wish Track would stock complete parts sets for other muskets.I hate dealing with the RS, but you dont have much of a choice.
This will be my next musket. I already have the parts for the 1728/30 pattern from the RS, and I am 1/2 way there for parts for the Second model Bess from the RS, getting parts from them requires much patience as we all know, but I will get there.
Then once my 4 Besses are built, I am planning for a Ferguson rifle,Officers Fusil, and a Royal Artillery Carbine.
Then I will start working on French muskets.............

Pray correct me if I am in error here but aren't those early Bess parts offered by TOW made by the Rifle Shoppe?

According to a sales rep. I talked to a few weeks back, Tracks 1742 Long Land furniture is made by the RS, but not the lock or the stock. However, the lock is a direct casting from an original; and is of very high quality equal to or better than the RS, Made here is the USA. I wanted to make sure of that and that it wasnt made in asia or the like.
The one I saw built up was of very high quality, and the lock was superb and sparked really good.

I have a friend that just finished one of Track's kits and then sent it to them to sell. It's still up on their sight but list as "Sale Pending" I bet he's happy, they've only had it a week. Take a look at it, he did all the proper stamps and everything, it's dead on...

He told me that Track does all the castings for that kit, I think they got the molds from RS, but now they cast their own parts for it, and they've almost always got everything on hand (for the Bess) including stocks and barrels.

I don't know how long it took to get the parts. I never knew about the gun till it was done. But I have heard about very long lead times for TRS so I immediately ordered a spare set of springs in case I should ever need one. The springs arrived in about two weeks!

I am planning to build a Rifle Shoppe 1742 Bess this winter after a total redue of a Military Heritage for practice. After seeing originals at the Heinze History Museum in Pittsburgh and at Ticonderoga (where you can take pictures)I have noticed two things that are hard to make out in pictures. The first is that on some 1742 Bess's I have found a flat semi-circle directly behind the tang before it falls into the beavertail that surrounds the tang and the second is that the end of the forend is thinned for its last 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch.I believe this allowed the ramrod to be grabbed easier. This did not look as though it was achieved through wear.It is hard to find examples of this model Bess in its original forend configuration since most were updated with a brass nosecap :m2c:.The reason I mention this is because we all want to be as original as possible and I would never have known without seeing originals.

TOTW have been offering a few Indian made locks as well...
they were completely unmarked - must have been on consignment from someone, but they looked pretty good from what I saw

Thats real nice can you give us a idea what it sold for ?

I'm not 100% right now but I think it went up on Track's sight for $2299.00 I talked to him today and I guess it went on "sale pending" within 24 hours...
