I am thinking about making a flintlock. Any suggestions on where to buy a quality maple stock blank?

Thanks in advance.

Several wood suppliers advertise in Muzzle Blasts magazine. One I have used is Wayne Dunlap. Very honest about grading his wood in terms of both hardness and curl. Fair prices according to grade.

I've bought them from Tigerhunt,Dunlap,Dixie Gun Works, Log Cabin, and Track of the Wolf and been happy with them. The last ones I bought were from Track of the Wolf and they are still in my shop (haven't got much stock work done since going back to school) and they are very nice. Just make sure that you buy from a reputable dealer and that the blanks are dry and the grain direction is right, it helps if you can look the blank over before you buy.

:v I've had very good luck with The Gun Works in Springfield Oregon. Shipping could be a consideration depending on your location. There is nothing like making your own selection, "beauty being in the eye of the beholder". :v

I have bought allot of blanks from Wayne Dunlap & have always been satisfied with the wood quality & pricing. You will get more for your money with him, IMHO. Normally I hand pick mine but I have had him send them some sight unseen & he has always sent me nice stuff. His pricing has always been more than fair. Allot of other dealers buy from him & they send them to dif. places & get them precarved to their own patterns.

I've bought several blanks on eBay. Usually they're something bought 20/50 years ago and "undone." I still see them on there and the prices aren't bad. Some are estate items. Most of what I got are spectacular grained cause the wood is from OLD trees.

I've purchased maple blanks sight unseen from Dunlap, Tiger Hunt and Freddie Harrison and all were satisfactory. I usually buy middle grades of both sugar and red maple and have rec'd no more or no less than described over the phone...Fred

There may be others just as good out there, but I have used two blanks from Dunlap (one bought from a friend, the other straight from Wayne) and both are quite nice. Wayne offers something of a guarantee - if you run into a hidden defect, you can send a picture to him and he may return some of your money depending on the severity of the flaw and the difficulty in fixing it. I don't know if anyone else offers as much.
