I have a renegade 50 cal 1inch across the flats.I would like to have it made into a smoothbore. I think it would be a 62 cal, 20 gauge.Im looking to shoot mostly shot for squirrel hunting. Has anyone had this done and what were the results as far as shooting shot? Thanks

As long as there is enough wall thickness you can do this with no problems.
you will have a fresh bore and it will shoot just fine.you might even be able to go to 16 Ga

From what I understand 20 guage is the largest you can get from a 1" Renegade barrel. I'm gonna send out a 50 or 54 barrel, haven't decided which yet, to make a jug-choked 20 for turkey...

Just some FYI...according to Ed Rayl, there are two considerations to over boring an existing barrel. One is the wall thickness but that's less important than the manufufcturer's type/size of breechplug threads that are used.

When the barrel boring operation takes place, the boring bit goes completely though the barrel end to end...it does not go in from the muzzle and stop short of the breechplug threads. So if the existing breechplug threads in the barrel are reduced too much, there won't be enough left for the plug itself to get a safe purchase on.

TC and GM's 1" barrels accept a .62cal smoothbore OK...and the barrel walls are still thick enough to even add .012" grooves to a .62cal smoothbore making it rifled, which Ed Rayl did on one of mine.

Ed bored a .54 Renegade barrel to .625 (his 20 gauge bore)for me. This one is rifled. He had no problem with the bore but said it was maximum for the 1" across the flats barrel.
At the same time I ordered a 32" smooth bore Ed Rayl made drop in barrel for my big bore hawken. 1" across the flats.
The barrels should show up in about a week and I will report on how it performs.

I picked up a t/c 1"round flint 50cal. Bore extremly rusted. I hand bored it out to 9/16-.562. then sent it to Ray to bore to 20ga. he sent back, t/c drilled the rear site screws to deep, allI did was take out the rifling and rust, then I had day lite in the bore.Moved the lock to another stock and got a 20ga smooth from pecationa river gm dropin, tip also has some in the white. im happy now. smoken32

on the .625 Renegade .54 rebore and rifled barrel and .625 smooth bore drop in from Ed Rayl. Got the letter in the mail with final pricing and shipping charges. Along with the price came a target. Ed glued sights on the barrels and shot a two shot group in each barrel and 50 yards. Rifled - Ball holes touching. Smoothy - 1" center to center. I hope I can hold as steady as Ed and I will be fine with that.
