Im really wanting a flintlock long rifle. However Im left handed. Having trouble finding left handed long guns. Any thoughts on shooting a right handed flint South Paw style would be appreciated.
thanks

Track of the Wolf has some Great Plains Rifles in left hand. they have the 1/60 rifling. they have it in .50 and .54 cal. If I had the money I'd get the .54 cal. in left hand.

I shoot a R hand flinter left handed for several years now BUT I now shoot it with safety glasses as I once had the flint send shards into my right forearm at the shot and made me think that this could have been my eyes. The arm leaked blood for a while.....

Wait untill you can come up with a Left handed rifle. You will nwever regret have a 'correct' rifle. I had 2 right haned Hatfields in the early 80's which made me say I would Never have another one.[I of course shoot lefthanded] now I have a pair of lefthanded flintlocks and love them. You will notice that right handed shooters very seldom buy Left handed guns.....

I dunnoh ... I am lefthanded and have 7 flintlocks now, 2 lefties and 5 righties and as long as the 'cast' of the stock is miminal, then I detect NO difference.

I have never, ever got splashed in the eye or arm (whilst shootin' a RH arm) and I'll consume 5-7 pounds of powdah per year.

Flash from the pan? To tell the truth, I don't see it from either side as all my attention is on the front sight ... where it should be!

well being a lefty.started out with rh guns,,no problems,,had a lefty made ..then, had a lefty gun made, with righthanded lock,,no problem..but that's me..I know right handers that can't shoot rh flinters,,,an know lefty's that shoot either,,an some lefty's can't shoot rh...its all up to you...if yer watchin the flash it don't matter where the lock is..you'll miss the target....it truthfully don't matter to me which side its on...jus gotta a think a sec on which side to prime..

I'd sure try both before buying, if possible. I got a big honking shard of flint embedded just under my right eye, then got pretty enthused about lefties. Man, was it easier for me to shoot. Now my righties gather dust and will someday be sold off to finance more lefties. If you like the style, Lymans are a solid option. TVM makes most of theirs in lefties too, but for a little less than twice the price.

Ask yourself this: If using a righty lefthanded wasn't such a big deal, why don't you see righties using lefthanded guns?

Because they don't want to come to the dark side...:)

Folks who shoot SxS flintlock shotguns don't seem to have a problem shooting one of the two barrels with the lock on the same side as their face.

Yeah, but you'd have to shim the lock out 1/2" or 3/4" further to the right to account for the width difference of two barrels vs. only one. :hmm:

True, but only if that distance is the factor that accounts for it working without a problem. :hmm: I submit that as reports of soldiers having powder marks on the left side of their faces due to the fellow to their left firing his firelock, demonstrate that the cone of gas and particles from even a worn touch hole, is small, and thus would not travel backwards several inches to reach the actual shooter, even when firing with the lock on the same side as the face in a single lock gun. :hmm: If the cone were large enough to reach the actual shooter, then the uniform of the solders to the right of anyone firing would be damaged..., and we don't find those accounts. I have been several feet away from folks firing to my left, not even shoulder to shoulder, and have been hit with flash from a touch hole.

My experience around the doubles is limited, and I don't see them having a problem shooting either. But I do see them having a problem HITTING with the second barrel. Hit percentage is enough lower that most I know don't fire their second barrel much.

Flantlander, first welcome to the forum. And second, I have been shooting righthanded flintlocks lefthanded for over 30 years. In all that time I have only hand one lefthanded rifle which I find a bit awkward to load since i wear my bag on my right side. The only problems I have ever hand is occassionally getting a little powder on my right forearm. Have never gotten anything in my eyes that I know of but I do wear glasses.

One thing about right handed rifles/fowlers, if you can get used to shooting them, there's a lot more of them out there with many more options. just my 2 cents worth freely given :)

This is one of the reasons why I started building them.

Life is to short to shoot wrong sided flinters.

Kinda like wearing your shoes on the wrong feet, you can do it it wont kill or cripple you, but why subject yourself to the un-needed misery.

If you can find a club nearby they can direct you towards a Mountain Man Trade Show, (I went to one this weekend ) there are typically lefthanders avaliable.

YMMV

:hmm: now, having wore shoes on wrong feet,,actually moccasins,(it was late,at a vous, an maybe had a drink before) but no way could I compare that to shootin a righty.. lefthanded...jus confusin a bit when ya prime,,,an truthfully, in the rain, carrying on left side , rh lock stays drier..closer to me I guess!
