I had the day off and to myself. The weather was nice so I fired up the forge and had some fun.

This is a roach belly friction folder. The blade is forged from 3/32 1095 and is 4 inches in length. Overall lenth is 8 7/16 inches.

The frame and liners are iron.

The handle scales are curley ash, scraped not sanded. Stained with aqua fortis, bone burnished and held with 5 iron pins.

Thanks

Joe, I really like the looks of that, very "old timey". Is it difficult to put one together? I never tried making a folder.

joe,

enjoyed the pics of the ash handled knife.

thought you might be interested that i have been using aquafortis for many years to color black ash for the baskets i make. usually i use the swabbing technique on one side of the splint and put it in the oven at about 200 for 10 or so minutes. then when i cut the weavers or spokes it gives a very clean edge with color only on the outside--very nice effect for baskets to have a pattern outside and all clean and white inside. it produces the most beautiful shades from coffee through coppertones to deep browns and does not effect the satin surface of the peeled splint at all. nice to see someone else using aquafortis on ash.

take care, daniel

Its not at all hard to put one together. It is the simplest design of any folding knife. The blade pivots around a pin and the rear of the blade needs to lock the travel of the blade any further. My first clasp or friction knives I hollowed out a slot in the handle for the blade to fold into. This is the first one I made with scales and liners. Liners make for smoother blade travel and less friction adjustments.

Thanks for all the comments,

Joe
