The day broke cold and the fog had set high as we moved from the truck on what was to be probably my last outing this year on my late season elk hunt .
I had two companions along on this hunt . They were friends who had been into black powder rendezvous and I had just a few weeks back talked into going on their first winter trek for elk in primitive attire.

A couple local ranchers who had agreed to let us hunt their large ranches had stopped to see us off with remarks of, you boys will be froze solid within and hour another laughing and saying you really get into this not you .
Well if you ever have seen Idaho

"put out the fire and headed back to the modern world".
That is the part I hate.

a luckless day in the wood is better than a day in the growing rat race.

Would have been a sight to see. Hope to have a chance to hunt out there some day before I get to much older. Great post.

captchee i have been there in hells canyon on the edge looking in ,seen about 100 head of elk even if you are able to shoot one take your frying pan you will have to eat it where you shoot it people dont realize that the canyonis deeper then the grand canyon in arizona. try flying over the selway and sawtooth in a little plane its not describable i have seen elk and lots of bear impossible to get to with a horse and on foot forget it. if idaho was flattened outit would be bigger then texas

I think I woulda put out the fire and headed down to wet a line in the Snake! My first time visit to Hells Canyon in July yeilded some of the best fishin' I ever seen west of Ole' Muddy. Never seen feistier trout in my life! I've been dreaming of elk huntin' that awsome rugged country ever since I left it.

shes not what she was 20 years ago but there is still places you can go and get away from most people.
this summer we want to plan a trek through the seven devils . this would take us along the rim from heavens gate to black lake .
Heavens gate is the start of whitebirds trail and if I recall right from this one point you can see for 5 states, Oregon , Washington , Idaho , Montana and Wyoming
Most everything for as far as you can see a Billy goat would think twice about climbing but it is a great place to get lost if that

I've spent some time there myself, and it surely is awesome country. I fished some around the seven devils.

if you wanna get a way from people go to the frank church wilderness. largest wilderness area in the lower 48.
