This is a picture of a 7/8" ball from my 7ga. It was remove from an Elm tree, check out the small oval shaped circle on the top view.

That is the back side of the original round ball, the lead flowed around the ball, leaving this cute little ring.

Original ball weight was 1000 grains, this one still weighs 989gr. Not much of a loss, for penetrating 4"s of tree. My load was 175FF, it moves the big ball 1100 fps.

The ball is 1.340 long, by 1.080 wide and nearly .500 thick.

And who said that round balls weren't efficient killers? The Elm tree is dead!

Just wanted to share the picture.

What do ya think, did it really turn inside out?

Seriously........I think you need a bigger gun. :rotf: :rotf:

Great photos!

175gr. 2ff pushing a 1000gr ball? Did you have to get someone to unscrew you out of the ground afterwards? :rotf: ....that's an elephant gun. Thanks for the pictures...very interesting.

The same expansion will happen to a 54 cal. I believe this shows why a load of 80FF penetrates about the same as 120FF. With the 80 grain load, you get less expansion and more penetration. The 120 grain load expands more rapidly and slows down faster due to the bigger frontal area, but leaves a bigger wound channel.

BS -

those are amazing photos. I find that to be a most interesting rifle. Not something I am sure I would want to shoot mind you, but it looks like a rifle that could handle hunting any large creature around...

excellent photos.. thanks

That is quite a formidable chunk of lead! Was the 7ga. enough gun to bag that trophy Elm tree? I'd like to see a picture of your trophy room, with the tree mount. :rotf:

No doubt... Just look at the Clement .50 ROA conversion. A 5 shot C&B that shoots .490 ball to 1250fps!

Both deer I shot last year had the round ball shaped like that against the inside of the skin on the opposite side of the deer. .54 cal.

How far away, and what was your load for powder?

About 20 and 25 yards with 70 gr. Triple 7 .
The 6 pt. buck spun and dropped from a heart shot. The ball missed ribs on both sides. The ball stuck in the skin on the right side. FLAT
The doe flipped head over heels. I caught the cartilage of the right shoulder blade, through one lung, and through the cartilage of the left shoulder blade. The ball stuck in the skin of the left side between ribs. FLAT

DavidS,

It is amazing what pure lead will do. :shocked2:

For some reason, I have only recovered one ball the was fired with about 50 grains of FFF, the other 50 grains went on the ground...........long story :rotf:
