My Trapper 45 cal pistol, shoot 200 grains REAL bullet very good. But what is a good PRB load? I have 440 cal balls, and WANO PP. Do you use less powder for rounds? Thanks.
no you can actually use more powder with PRB than conical. bear in mind barrel length. after so much you are just blowing unburnt powder out the muzzle.
I have a .50 Hawken pistol and after 40 grs. it throws unburnt powder out.
try 30 grs. if it does well (should) try 40 grs. bet you will be blowing unburnt powder with that load and little velocity gain though. shoot it at dusk to check for flash/fireball at the muzzle indicating unburnt powder.
I have found this old formula for PBR loads to be right on the money. The formula is 11.5 grains of powder for every 1 cu. inch of volume in the barrel.
I'll try to spell out how to figure this:
barrel diameter /2 = x
square x = x2 then multiply by 3.14 = y
y x length of barrel in inches = z
z x 11.5 = maximum load that the barrel will burn effectively under a PRB
For a .50 cal. w/ a 36" barrel the formula would be figured thus:
.50/2 = 0.25 X 0.25 = 0.0625 X 3.14 = 0.19625 X 36 = 7.065 X 11.5 = 81.247 grains
