I finally saved up the cash to buy my .54 caliber percussion Lyman GPR and it should be in my hands this week.
Next on my list will be a flinter.
I started out with an inline  but have switched to traditional and I love it.
This will be my first roundball shooter, I hope it performs as well as my other rifles do with conicals when it comes to accuracy.
This is rifle #4, three sidelocks and one inline.
For Musketman, this will bring my bore diameter up to 2.08!
I'll have her on the range this weekend and will let you know how she shoots.

I think you will like it.there good shooters. The drop in the stock is just about right.I whited out all the metal on mine an was gonna brown it but have kinda got a liken for the way it looks now.I also redid the wood.Still shoots the same but i like it better than i ever have.
Ya want a flinter?Me too.I had the money saved for a pedersoli 45 penn rifle but wussed out an spent most of it on my honey,Darn that gal i never could resist her.Ah maybe someday i will try saven up again but this time for a tvm poorboy or sumin.Umtill then i will just have to keep popen caps i guess.
Now that you are getten totally hooked ,might want to think about getten rid of one of them thar rifles. You know the one that just dont looks like it belongs no more ::

Did you buy a finished gun or a kit? Just a couple things I felt had to be changed on mine. You can see Lucifer in the PHOTO's section. ::

I got the finished gun.
Building one scares me right now, maybe I'll build my flinter when the time comes.

Once you master the flintlock, you may even shun the percussion... :winking:

I love my flintlock, there is nothing like filling up the pan of an unloaded flintlock with priming powder and touching it off in the house...

Just the look on your wife's face when all of the smoke alarms go off is worth the trip to the dog house... :haha: :haha:

As I have. My first rifle was a flint, so I'm kinda partial to the older ways. I bought a caplock GPR last year, but I sold it 'cause it wasn't 'low-tech' enough for my taste. ::

Now that sounds like the perfect way to spring a surprise birthday party! But I think several flintlocks would have a better effect. ::

No problem. I've been in the doghouse so many times that I've learned to sleep in there quite comfortably. ::

Sheeesh... Some of us never been in a real house. I can't believe they'd actually let you guys in either! 'Specially Moosketman if'n he's wastin' powder like that.:: :: ::

I've also shunned all other ML's since I got flint.

I got the GPR Friday and took it out for it's maiden shoot yesterday.
First thing I had to do was fit the wedge pins. They would not go through so I did some filing and got them in.
The next thing was a big problem...The nipple was stuck in it!
The whole barrel came coated with what looked like alox but it stuck the darn nipple in. I broke my nipple wrench trying to get it out.
I got it out by drilling it with progressively larger bits until it came out. Luckily I didn't damage the threads.
I was not terribly impressed at the range.
I had to file the front sight about half away to get my shot's up near the ten ring at 50 yards.
After that the groups were nothing to brag about.
I was shooting .530 RB with .018 ticking lubed with BB over 80 grains of GOEX 2f.
I have to get used to the buckhorn sights. I have a peep sight on my other Lyman and it has spoiled me.
I took it home and cleaned it up, lapped the barrel, and oiled the stock.
We'll see what I can do with it this weekend.

Glad to hear you bought the GPR.
As for the sights, the GPR folks intentionally left the front sight tall so the buyer can file it to the height he needs for the load he wants. In other words, they all shoot low without filing the sight.

The accuracy will improve with more shooting. Also, each rifle (even the best custom made ones) all have their own "best" loads.
As you try different loads (powder weight/ball diameter/patch material, patch thickness and lube) you will also be smoothing out the bore.
Everything will come together and I bet you will be more than pleased.

Sorry to disappoint you but I don't give up that easy.
I'll get her worked in and soon I'll be braggin' on how she shoots.

Awe shucks, no problem. Send me the Lyman and I'll tincker withher and get her shootin right and send it back in a couple years. ::
Just kiddin'. She'll shoot and shoot well. She needs some "break in" time and fondling.

I lapped my barrel on the GPR and boy what a difference!
Sheet was shootin' real sweet Saturday.
I still found my patches were just barely cut so I took her home and ran 0000 steel wool in her for about 50 strokes.
Back to the range this weekend and I'll see what happens.
I found she actually shoots the best so far with a .015 patch and .530 RB.
The group opened up a bit with the tighter .018 patch.

Huntin

While your having fun finding out what the best load is, don't forget to look around for some .535 dia balls.

I know, each gun is different but several of my .54s seem to like the .535 ball with a .015 patch best.
Another way of looking at justifying buying a box of .535s is it gives you another reason for shooting 100 more shots (as if you need one). :)
