:hmm: Hello folks, can any body help ? i need a larger grip for my old army that leaves the spine of the grip exposed but is longer and joins below the base :v

Yep, there are a world of options for it.Anything for a Black Hawk will fit. I have a set of Goncalo Alves grips on mine. Welcome to the big hands club.

Do you mean a Pachmyer type grip?

I have a set of the older Herretts in wood, they look very good, and better still, are ambidextrous.

They DO hide a bit of the backstrap though...

Yes, Hogue makes one for the Blackhawk that works great. I have on on mine. The backstrap is exposed, there are finger ridges on the front for better grip and you can use all fingers (even the pinkie) with these. Hope this helps, Jim

tippyguru - I may not be understanding your need correctly but think you may only be wanting more on the bottom area (widest front to back) of the grip to hold on to and give your smaller fingers something to wrap around ? ?

A Ruger Super Blackhawk grip frame will provide more to hold onto. It would look like the difference between an 1851 Navy Colt and an 1860 Army Colt.

Tac's suggestion of older Herrett's aftermarket grips is very good if I am understanding what you want. Many of the Herrett's grips I have seen have extra wood where you seem to want it on the bottom and these grips can be bought used very inexpensively.

You might be able to buy a used Super Blackhawk grip frame at a gun show or on the internet. You might have to use an Old Model grip frame(three screws thru frame same as Old Army frame). It is possible the Super Black Hawk grip frame will not swap due to possibly longer frame length (think longer frame was on New Models only). Someone else should be better able to address the ease of grip frame parts interchangabiltiy.

If attending a gun show be sure and take your disassembled gun with you to try parts for proper fit, etc.

Also, you can use original style Ruger Super BH wood grips or the larger aftermarket ones.

p.s. I have large hands and do not prefer the Super Black Hawk size grip frame. My favorite guns are Colt Single Action Armies and 1851 Navies. I prefer to curl my little finger under the bottom of the grip. With more powerful SAA loads I often cup my off hand under my grip hand. Works for me.

Hope this helps. :hmm:

 Thanks one and all, It never ceases to amaze me the depth of knowledge and helpfulness from the forum members; we have a Hogues dealer here in Australia and the initial reply was we don't deal anything that will fit the old army............nothing like a bit of knowledge i say, I'll see how i go this time. regards Phill
