Hey guys,

I just came across a Ruger old army in a shop. It's NIB. The shop owner bought it from a friend who never got to shoot it and is asking $350. From my quick web search this seems like a pretty good price.

Any experiences with these pistols?

Thanks,

Scott

They are the Best BP revolver made IMO. Built just like the Super Blackhawk. Accurate shooters too. Is it a blued or stainless one?

The Ruger Old Army is not a repleca of any historic revolver (and it doesn't try to be). It is a ball & cap version of the Blackhawk. It is however (as with most Rugers) a very well built, reliable and accurate firearm. I know of many who have them and have heard nothing but praise for them.

Yep, they're the best cap n' ball out there made with modern coil springs and a somewhat modern design too. That's a decent price too, grab it while you can.

If you get that Ruger, be sure to find some .457 dia balls for it.

While most of the Italian repro's use .451 or .453 balls, the Ruger chambers are .453 in diameter so the .451 and .453 balls would be loose.

I might add that (per Dixie) the barrel bore is .443 diameter while the grooves are .451 diameter.
The chamber being .002 larger than the groove diameter assures a good tight fit which IMO accounts for the superb accuracy these guns are noted for.

Zonie :)

Thanks,

I have only had my '51 Navy for about a month now and I am debating whether I really need another pistol. It seems too good to pass up. The experience I have had with their cartridge guns has been great.

And just for the fun of it, the ROA can ALSO be a cartridge gun. The Kirst Kartridge Konverter (Brownells) drops is letting your ROA be a non-NFA (no paper) 6shot .45LC.

Like most have said, top of the line shooter. I have nocked down a few steel bear at the 200 yard mark with one. Use 2F and hold about 3' over the target at that range. I found that mine liked 2F better than 3F.

I've had my Old Army for 25 years or more. I wanted a Colt Walker repro and luckily the guy behind the counter told me to check out the Ruger. As everybody said already, it's a quality revolver and mine is suprisingly accurate.

I'm in a muzzleloader club that does not allow them in competition. I asked why and was told that they are too good.
Ruger makes extremely fine handguns and some very fine rifles too. I would not hesitate to buy
the old army.
I might be biased a wee bit though. It says Ruger down along my pistol permit so many times, that I sought out a few non-Rugers just to mix things up

Meh. They are not necessairly better just stronger.

Using target loads, a good shot will shoot just as well with a well tuned Uberti as a ROA.
