Could be.
can't really tell by the photo, with a blank background and nothing to compare.
But I have seen rust brown done to a blueish color

I'd say it's more of a Rust Bluing look.
rust up the part and boil in between rusting/carding steps or at the end of
the rusting process. each way has it's own fans??

this is my first attempt at rust bluing the UH I finished a couple of months ago.

Based on your picture I would say Yes. That barrel is browned using a cold browning process.
It does not show any of the blacking that would be called bluing.

Unlike the Hot browning process which uses Birchwood Casey Plum Brown, the cold browning process leaves a soft looking matt finish which is a dark brown after it is oiled.

The Hot browning process is very thin and it doesn't change the appearance of the surface except to color it.
If the surface is sanded very smooth to a shiny look before applying PB, the finish will look like a brown very smooth shiny surface.

In my opinion, the actual color/shade shown in the photo looks more like rust blue, kind of a non-distinct dark color. Browning tends to look more brown (lighter shade with a hint of red). Could be either due to photographic color drift, but to me, that looks like rust brown that has been boiled (rust blue). Bill

well whatever it is the contrast of the gorgeous stock and matte metal parts is really nice and will be influencing my final decision on bluing.

The gun in question is Kit Carson's Hawken by Carver Tripp on TOW's site. There is a gallery of photos of this rifle in build here:

There is a bottle of LMF Barrel Brown in the background of several photos. I'd say the darkness of the finish is due to it having been oiled and it appears even darker against a white background.

Also, be sure to check out the pics of the "Presentation Hawken" on Carver Tripp's site. The rifle itself is a bit pimpin' for my taste, but I sure do dig that mahogany and brass presentation box it's in!

so on a 1770 style rifle would BC cold plum brown work? If not what process would you use?
