Ok guys,
Thanks for all the help on the request for stock refinishing. I have taken all the metal off and will start on it tomorrow. Now I have another problem I need help with. When I removed the buttplate and the lock and the barrel, I noticed some rust on the various parts including the barrel. Now the barrel is already a nice browned color but there seems to be additional rust on it. What's the best way to remove it? Steel wool and baking soda?

Also, since the gun is an old CVA kit, the lock assembly has that brown patina color. Any way to brighten the outside surface up without ruining the lock assembly itself?

The daughter is helping me on this and she seems to be real eager so we're going to take our time and try to make something nice for her to last a while.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

You can use a greenie pad and mineral oil on the barrel, it'll take off the surface rust in short order. Light touch, plenty of oil.

Same thing for the lock. It comes apart easily, just take some pix or scan it to help remember how it goes back together.

Glad to hear the DD is helping with the rifle, or are you helping her??? :)

I have found through expirence that once you remove the worst of the rust that there should be some color left if not you removed too much rust. Makes sence No? Just go slow and easy. when I think I am where I want to stop I break out the "Flitz" polish. This polish contains no abrasive but does remove surface rust staining it also is a pretty good protectant against rust just go easy and stay away from the steel wool at this point.
