I keep drooling over the colonial fowler with the sliding wood patchbox .... but with Gas, the economy and the hikes in prices on everything you see, I'm quite financially challenged for the next year or two when it comes to gun buying.
I can wish for it though ....

Rusty....you are aware that you will pull some strings and HAVE that gun before you know it!
You can always justify the purchase by saying that you should get it now, because the price is just going to get higher the longer you wait!!!
Thats reasonible Logic..isnt it?

Not to mention you NEED to buy it now before the election and it's considered dangerous and banned!

FWIW, My buddy has the cumberland fowler. It's a nice piece.

Cheers,
Pat

Yep ...I'd really like to have that gun. If I were do something toward getting that gun made, I'd contact Buckeye Barrel (who supplies the barrels for Jim Chambers) and have one of their .54/28 gauge 46 inch barrels shipped to Larry Williams to start the ball rolling.
Just keep on dreamin' I guess .......

narrowing the choice down to one may be difficult. anyone know how reliable he is, how long for delivery etc? stuff on the site looks great!

Not much info on Rustic Arms. What about other builders, who've you dealt with, what was your experience like?

Larry (L.E.Williams)over at Rustic Arms is a great guy and I think theres more info about him and his work over on the CLA artisans page.I would call and talk directly to him about what you want.

I agree TC, I have talked to him and he was very helpful. I did have to delay on ordering the kit I wanted but plan to go ahead ASAP.

I totally agree here. Larry offers guns appropriate to a number of periods and impressions at very reasonable costs.I have read post after post where the writers bemoan the cost of custom guns no matter that these guns are reasonably priced.I am fully aware of the costs of parts for the average gun not to mention the labor and other related costs. My son and I are preparing to have a gun built copying an 18th century French gun and the parts alone are about the same or perhaps a little more than the cost of a complete gun of somewhat the same period from Larry and ready to use and shoot.I have seen and handled his guns and can truthfully say that they are well worth their prices.I don't know about his turn around time but I am convinced he will do his best to do right by his customers.
This was an absolutely unsolicited post by me.

I was always concerned with the "Curse of the Skipped Caliber" and have done my best to make sure there are no gaps in the numerical progression of popular calibers. That means starting with a .25 and running at least through .75 with popular stops (as determined by you) along the way. Look at it in the same way a sheep or turkey hunter approaches a Grand Slam and the sacrifices one must make in accomplishing a goal. Plus...custom muzzleloaders are artistic, representing value that will only increase with age and usage...and they will never be any less expensive than they are right now. Tom (p.s. I hope my wife doesn't read this and begin to live by this standard.)

Glad I stumbled upon this company! Just looked through his website, been wanting a Smoothbore since I built my rifle many years ago! His "kits" sound like just the ticket for me, I did much of the work on my first piece including forging the steel architecture. I like the fact that he leaves tons of work for the assembler to finish.

I will have to call him during the week, I dont see mention of turn times for a kit but he states 1 yr with completes (I assume)?

Any more input on this gentleman? I am impressed with what I see so far.

I think I'll make a call this week also. Barrels? What do ya'll think about the tube barrels?

I looked into making a barrel years ago. Talking with several metal suppliers, I came to the same type of stock as he is using. Some of that tubing is rated at thousands of pounds of pressure. That part does not scare me. I did however talk to a gent last night that had issues with one of his kits, bad inletting, breechplug smaller than the end of the barrel etc.......he advised against the company.

Although I do not own one of his pieces I have seen a couple that came from him and appear to be a nice affordable well built rifle and would look to him in the future as an option
just my two cents worth

Gentlemen,
Mr. Williams is very nice (on the several occasions I spoke on the phone).
I had a smooth rifle he made and sold it because I was unhappy with the work. It was very functional, just not what I would have liked to see on a finished piece. I sold it and it was returned for the same reason. Eventually, Wayne Zurl ended up with it.
I have purchased from other makers for the same (or better) price and been happier with the work.
However, that was 5 or so years ago. Maybe things have changed,
David
